I'd heard much about Ella, POV's Minister of Delight. People had described her to me as "amazing," "vivacious" and "just plain bonkers." I had to know what made this unassuming boxer strive for so much more out of life than simply chasing cars.
We met up at a local park near downtown Atlanta one sunny afternoon. From the moment I looked into her big brown eyes, I was held captive – and filled with questions. Ella was kind enough to answer them for me in this exclusive interview.
Q: Ella, you're really loved by the folks at Point of Vision. What is it you do there that's so special?
A: As Chief Minister of Delight, it's my job to make sure people relax, even when it's busy and everyone is working hard. I do a lot of doggie stuff to help them. Like jumping in their laps, licking their hands when they don't know I 'm around, stuff like that. Before you know it, they're wagging their tails right along with me. Playing with me keeps them happy and creative.
Q: What else do you do there?
A: Well, it's not all fun and games, if that's what you're getting at. I'm the chief canine in charge of security, so I have to keep my nose to the air, sniffing out problems, watching for intruders and welcoming clients. I sometimes do a little welcome–dance to let them know how glad I am to see them - the clients, not the intruders, that is.
Q: I heard that your human, Bruce Payne, has a special nickname for you. What's that about?
A: He's giving away all my secrets, isn't he? When I was a pup, I had a fun game of tearing up everything in the back yard, including Brucie's flowers. Brucie started calling me "Napalm," because I could wipe everything out in an instant!
Q: Being at POV day in and day out, have you learned much about brand-focused communication?
A: You bet your Milk Bones, I have. I've learned how important it is to know who you are and be who you are. Me, I'm a boxer. So I don't pretend to be some other kind of dog, you know? I mean, sometimes I used to think I should act like a pointer, the "Pointer of Vision," if you will. But now I realize they love boxers and they love me, so it's better to be myself.
Q: Is it hard to fit in with the rest of the team at POV? I mean, considering you're a dog and all?
A: Well, it's better than being a squirrel or something, don't you think?? Hmmm... actually, a squirrel could be fun right about now! A nice game of chase... OH wait.... What is that??? Is that a squirrel – over there in that tree?
Q: Do you have anything else you'd like to share?
A: Yes. Life sometimes gets a little too serious. I know how to fix that, and so do the folks at POV. Always look at the world from a fresh and new perspective. Be a puppy your whole life. Bark when you're happy. Don't be afraid to cuddle, no matter how big or how old you get. Be true to your brand – or in my case, your breed. And most importantly of all, play, howl, and let people know how much you love them!
